Born in Brooklyn in 1942, she grew up under modest circumstances. Her exceptional talent became apparent early on: as a teenager she recorded her first demo tracks and sang in the school choir – among them the future superstar Neil Diamond. In the early 1960s she broke through in New York clubs and on television, soon signing with Columbia Records. Her debut album earned her two Grammy Awards in 1964. With the leading role in Funny Girl, she conquered Broadway and Hollywood alike and won the Academy Award for Best Actress in 1969. In 1977 she received another Oscar for the song “Evergreen” from A Star Is Born. Musically, Streisand has always remained versatile – moving effortlessly from Broadway standards to pop and great film soundtracks. More than sixty albums later, one thing is clear: Barbra Streisand is not the voice of a single era – she is an institution.
